Job Description

As an early team member and core contributor, the Senior Product Engineer, Frontend helps define how sideby builds user-facing products from rapid prototyping to production-ready workflows to the feedback loops that drive iteration. You care about clarity, speed, and craft in the user experience, AND you’re excited to simplify complex, AI-enabled learning interactions into flows that feel intuitive, trustworthy, and genuinely useful. We have a weekly tech sprint planning and execution rhythm with strategic collaboration, but mainly you are working independently. You are helping our product engineering work mature with your expertise.

Working closely with the CTO and CEO, this role partners early in shaping product direction, translating ambiguous ideas into shipped experiences, and continuously refining them based on usage and feedback. You thrive in ambiguity, move fluidly between idea and implementation, and see building/prompting/writing code as designing experiences that unlock educator impact at scale. As a part of our start up engineering team, you are expected to take ownership and contribute to developing foundational practices around engineering at sideby.

The Senior Product Engineer, Frontend is a builder at heart, combining strong frontend craft with product intuition to shape how learners actually experience sideby. Equal parts engineer, product thinker, and UX collaborator, this role is about more than implementing interfaces. This role is about deciding what should exist, how it should feel, and how it evolves based on real user behavior.

Responsibilities

Product Ownership and User Experience

  • Own core learner-facing workflows from early concept through shipped experience and ongoing iteration

  • Partner with the CEO and CTO early to shape what gets built — not just how — by questioning assumptions, simplifying flows, and prioritizing what will drive real user impact

  • Translate ambiguous product ideas into intuitive, high-quality experiences that feel fast, clear, and trustworthy for educators and learners

  • Simplify and reduce complexity in workflows — knowing what to cut, sequence, or rethink to create clarity for users

  • Move fluidly from idea → prototype → production, using experiments, feedback, and data to guide what to build next while balancing speed, quality, and simplification

  • Own features beyond launch by continuously improving them based on real usage, feedback, and observed behavior

  • Instrument workflows and features to understand user behavior, and use that data to guide iteration and product decisions

  • Engage with user feedback and support signals to identify where workflows break or create friction, and translate those insights into clear product improvements, fixes, and iteration priorities

  • Bring strong frontend and product judgment while collaborating closely with domain experts to ensure experiences reflect real educator needs

Frontend Craft and Interaction Design

  • Design and build polished, performant frontend experiences using modern frameworks (e.g., React, TypeScript)

  • Own the quality of interaction details including state management, edge cases, responsiveness, accessibility, and performance

  • Raise the bar for frontend quality through attention to performance, accessibility, and interaction detail

  • Develop and evolve reusable UI patterns and workflows that enable faster iteration without sacrificing user experience

  • Craft AI-enabled interactions that feel intuitive and useful, including handling latency, feedback loops, uncertainty, and user control

Product-Driven Engineering Collaboration

  • Work closely with the CTO and backend systems to define API contracts, data flows, and technical tradeoffs that support strong user experiences

  • Serve as a product and frontend voice in scoping conversations to help the team understand tradeoffs, sequencing, and opportunities to simplify

  • Collaborate across product, design, and engineering to ensure what we build is grounded in real educator workflows and needs

Leadership and Culture

  • Model sideby’s values and norms. Seek and expect collaboration. Celebrate small wins.

  • Foster a culture of clean code, kind reviews, and joyful iteration by making engineering both rigorous and human.

  • Help shape the norms of a startup engineering team by balancing velocity with care, and craft with curiosity.

  • Coach, mentor, and support teammates as we grow by offering feedback that builds trust, sharpens thinking, and reflects a shared commitment to excellence.

  • Hold space for uncertainty, conflict, and learning to help build a culture where growth is expected, feedback is kind, and outcomes are shared.
